Demi Lovato on X-Factor
So here's just a lil' backstory on my sudden obsession: Demi Lovato wore this roll a few weeks ago (or something...I dont watch this stuff) on the X-Factor. Inspired by her rockabilly-cool, the creative team at J. Henry Salon took to tucking and twisting 'til we figured out how to get a totally tubular top.
We all fell in love, so much so that we took to the silver screen! J. Henry does the beauty segment of Good Day Maine on Fox23, and this past weeks was all about updo's, since we are in the midst of awards and bridal season! We weren't totally inspired by the recent Emmy Awards red carpet...c'mon, are you kidding me? It was casual...it just didn't work...nothing of it did...

I'll be showing a step-by-step on how to do a double victory roll with a french twist! As you can see, my hair is not very long at all. I swear, all you need is shoulder length hair, some time to practice, AND:
1. comb
2. teasing comb
3. clips for sectioning
4. a million bobby pins
5. l'oréal professional infinium hairspray
First section your hair into 3 portions: starting from the top of the crown to just behind the ears, tie off the back half of your hair. Make another line down the part and clip each side off as well. GREAT JOB!
THEN START BACKCOMBING!
This is only necessary because we're doing a big, bad french twist with our victory rolls today. The back portion of your hair can be variated depending on whatever it is you want. I'll show the alternate ending after the first one. Backcomb the entire back portion of your hair and spray with lacquer.
Next, smooth hair over to one side and secure with bobby pins. Cross your pins to create an anchor to french twist onto. Simply start with the bottom bobby, then link another pin to the top of the first one, repeat again zig-zagging up the center of the back. Spray.
See!? ☝
Then gently comb hair in the opposite direction, over your previously placed bobby pin anchor. Try to think of this as one solid fold of hair that you don't want to separate. Some things just require a lot of hairspray and that's ok. So use it, and tuck the ends of your panel into itself and on top of the anchor. Secure with bobby pins and hairpins in the fold, and spray. There should be a clear nucleus at the top of your twist. You can use the pick end of the teasing comb to shape your twist from the inside! SPRAY, PIN, SPRAY!
Now get ready to roll: Take down one of your front sections and backcomb it real big! Smooth the outer layer by holding out the entire section and lightly combing. Try not to disturb the volume that you just built, you need it to hold your roll! SPRAY.
Next hold the tail end of the entire section between your pointer and middle fingers. Hold the tip of your tail with your other hand to keep your roll from unraveling. Use your thumbs to roll the section up and your pointer finger as anchor; roll back until its reached the desired height and positioning, PIN!
Try to keep your anchor sturdy against your head as your pinning and spray with hairspray. Spray a lot.
TADA! Now do it again to the other side!
Another alternative to roll your tubular tresses is to lock down the tail of your section with two bobby pins. Face your pins in opposite directions, tuck in your tail, then hold the ends of your pins and use those to turn your roll.
ALTERNATE ENDING:
THERE YOU HAVE IT! Don't get frustrated, darlings! It will take a couple tries, but you'll figure out what works best for you. To gain more control just remember to backcomb and spray. Take your time, 'x' your bobby pins, and keep a window open (lolz)! I'd also LOVE to see you in the salon for a victory roll walk-through, or for that special occasion roll ♕
